Itinerary

Day - 1

Upon arrival of your flight at OR Tambo (formerly Johannesburg) International Airport an Falcon-Safari.com representative will hand your tickets to you and assist you onto a scheduled Air Botswana flight to Maun. Flight BP212 departing at 10:10 and arrival in Maun at 11:40.  Check-in for International flights is two hours prior to departure.

Upon arrival of your flight at Maun Airport you will be met by a representative of Planet Baobab and transferred by road to the lodge for check-in.  The transfer will take approximately two hours.

Arrive at the Baobab capital of the world! A traditionally styled mud Kalanga and Bushmen grass hut village shaded by giant baobab trees whose average age is 4 000 years old.
Take a stroll with one of the local Guides through the surrounding bush as he points out local ecology, geology and culture and watch the sunset with a cool Gin and Tonic over a camp fire set deep in the bush. Return to Planet Baobab for a tasty, wholesome dinner. Think pillow, think sleep, think … baobab.

Day - 2

At the crack of dawn the camp staff will have you transported to Ntwetwe in a little over two hours. You can spend the day exploring the pans and the surrounding area.  Ntwetwe is the bigger of the two Makgadikgadi Pans, extending as far as the eye can see in all directions.  A breathtaking expanse of nothingness.

The peripheries are dotted with the remains of cultures long since departed and the pans are scattered with the salty, petrified skeletons of past wet seasons.  Birds, insects, mammals and reptiles have all succumbed to the sapping heat of the pans and their perfectly preserved remains are a strange reminder of the fleeting fertility of the rains. After a delicious lunch, head off on quad bikes into the magical unknown.

Travel far across the unexplored wilderness of the salt pans.  Enjoy a drink before a barren yet beautiful sunset followed by a barbeque dinner cooked to perfection by the ever-talented guides. At the end of an action-packed day snuggle into your bedroll under the phenomenal Makgadikgadi, your very own star-spangled ceiling.

Day - 3

You will be transferred back to Maun Airport by a representative of Planet Baobab. Arrive at Maun Airport where you will be met by your Delta Air pilot for the 20 minute light to Delta Camp.

Two overnights at Delta Camp in a standard twin reed chalet with private en-suite facilities inclusive of all meals, all local brand drinks, teas/coffees, snacks, game-viewing and laundry

This intimate and informal safari camp nestles on a small Falcon close to the south-western edge of Chief’s Falcon, heart of the Okavango Delta – the vast oasis of the Kgalagadi Desert, Botswana. Accommodation is in spacious ‘lethaka’ (reed) chalets with en-suite facilities. The amazing design of the Chalets is such that you enjoy the luxuries of a ‘top rate’ hotel, but without affecting the environment; you will find you share your chalet with the trees around which the chalets have been built rather than having been cut down during their construction.

The Okavango Delta is a shifting web of crystal-clear channels, lagoons, sweeping floodplains and palm-studded Falcons. Home to over 450 bird and 1 000 plant species, crocodile, hippo, elephant, buffalo – in fact the full spectrum of African big-game and several species of antelope that are amongst the world’s rarest – the Okavango has earned its reputation as one of the world’s premier wilderness areas. Your chalet at Delta Camp directly overlooks the waterways.

Delta Camp is on the banks of the Boro, one of the primary watercourses of the Okavango. Excursions, by foot and mokoro – the traditional dug-out canoe – are conducted in the renowned Moremi Game Reserve, with your own professional game-guide, a man of the swamps, completely at one with his environment. Dine overlooking the sweep of the Delta, or take a beautifully prepared picnic onto one of the many nearby Falcons for a secluded and intimate experience.

This unusual Camp engenders in its staff and guests alike, an acute awareness of the ecological sensitivity of this magnificent area. Bio-degradable products have been sourced and are used, careful separation and treatment of refuse ensures that nothing that is not fully bio-degradable stays on the Falcon – light aircraft remove cans, bottles and the like from the Okavango altogether.

The accent is on peace and tranquillity (stalking game on foot provides all the excitement one could wish for) and guests are actively encouraged to visit a local village, home to our guides, and to interact, should they wish to, with the people there.

Day - 5

You will be transferred to the airstrip in time for your scheduled light aircraft charter flight to Mapula Lodge.

Three overnights at Mapula Lodge in a standard twin bedded chalet with private en-suite facilities inclusive of all meals, all local brand drinks, teas/coffees, snacks, game-viewing and laundry

Accommodating no more than 20 guests, the Lodge has well appointed luxury Chalets, with en-suite bathrooms (bath and shower). The chalets all overlook a lagoon in front of the Lodge. The attention to detail and use of local craftsmanship in the construction of the Chalets is particularly impressive and attractive. Additional facilities for guests include a small swimming pool and sun deck, and a well stocked bar.
All the activities at Mapula Lodge allow guests to experience the beauty and diversity of Africa, and you have the added advantage of being able to able to enjoy game walks, and night drives (not available at lodges situated within National Parks), along with morning and afternoon drives, or mokoro excursions. Game viewing is particularly good in this area. A pod of Hippo lives in the lagoon opposite the lodge – adding their vocal talents to the noises of the bush, and trees around the Lodge abound with an excellent variety of bird species.
Being in a permanent water area, Mapula Lodge can generally offer year round water activities, especially important during the months of January to May when water levels in the Okavango can become too low in some areas, to allow the use of the traditional dug-out mokoro.
